Solid Gold Pocket watch History

Pocket watches came into the world in the 16th century after many clock makers had already introduced weight driven clocks, candle clocks, and sundials.  All of the sudden, clocks weren’t required to stay in the home and could be worn around the owner’s neck, or in their pocket.  All of the sudden, pocket watches were luxury, and very desirable to most people living in the 16th century.

By the 17th century, pocket watches had come so far with popularity that watch makers everywhere decided that they could put a little craftsmanship into making pocket watches and introduced several watches including those with gems and diamonds, however, the most luxurious types were the solid gold pocket watches.  This was one of the ways that many people would show wealth.

At the beginning of the 18th century, watch makers started using jewels as bearings and started adding diamonds to the solid gold pocket watches in swiss-pierre-renoir-pocket-watchorder to bring up the value.  In the late 18th century, different types of oil were introduced to keep the gears that moved the watches hands, smooth.  By this time, keeping accurate time was extremely demanded, and rightfully so with such a luxurious pocket watch.

During the 19th century, solid gold pocket watches were so popular that near everyone at least desired to have one, but only few could afford them.  Some of the big Watch makers were Ulysse Nardin, Heuer, IWC, LeCoultre & Cie, and many others.

The 20th Century was the most popular time for solid gold pocket watches, and as time passed, certificates of authenticity were becoming demanded by nearly all consumers.

As time went by pocket watches seemed to become less popular as they introduced wrist watches and these solid gold pocket watches became more of a history item.  Now, most people probably know someone that has, or had, a pocket watch at some time.  Those that had the solid gold pocket watches probably still have them and won’t come off of the very easily so if you ever have the chance to own one,  it is almost certain that you would enjoy every minute of it… literally.
